alkalinity and carbonate hardness are the same...
alkalinity and carbonate hardness are the same thing. You want total hardness to determine your Mg. Check out this test kit....

You can also easily find out your Mg level pretty close by testing your "total hardness" and your Calcium level and subtracting the Ca from the total hardness. The difference is Mg.
