I think that is just the way it goes with percs. I don't know what you were expecting, but I was happy to get them to a decent size. I think they will color up as they get larger so who knows.

You don't have to have a valve before the inlet...
You don't have to have a valve before the inlet to the pump. Just make sure you wetvac out the return section to below the hole of the return pump before removing the pump. That's what I do. only...
