Where on earth did you hear that? 12 inches is what most sites say and while diving I have never seen one bigger than 10-12. 18 is huge!:eek1:

Really who and where is that post? High TDS will cause you algae problems. That is why most people make their own water and use RODI to get 0 TDS.

You need to make sure it is a food safe rubbermaid brute. I know for sure the gray ones are and have no problems with those. I have 2 of the 32 gallon and 1 of the 44 gallon.

Rubbermaid Brute containers are food grade and do not leach phosphates. No smell from mine either and I leave them covered for weeks and notice no smell.

I used 3/8 inch cabinet grade plywood to skin mine. Yes you can use finish nails and I would also glue but not necessary. Wood filler over the holes before stain will give it a nice look.
