I don't worry much about blade height to be honest. If the pieces being cut are <1.5", I tend to keep the blade height relatively low just to save fingers. Other than that - no worries either way...

What brand is the acrylic? It's a good price if it's decent cell cast acrylic (Polycast, Acrylite GP, or PlexiGlas G). I would not recommend any other brand for aquaria.

FWIW, I *once* had a Whiteside spiral upcut last me 13 months of daily use, not 8 hrs/day but for an hour or so every day. I use them on acrylic up to 1.25". I normally get about 100hrs out of them...
