Are you sure that's what is causing your softies trouble? What does your ammonia test say? If your CUC can't get to him in the rock, I'd take the rock out and let it rot in a bucket.

You'd have to have something stirring the tank, otherwise it would all settle on the bottom. Plus I'd be worried about it rotting. I would test it while you're in town if you try it though.

Sounds like normal surface film. A skimmer will get rid of it if you're skimming from the surface, or you can point a powerhead at it to create surface agitation and hide it.

I cut the bottom off of a 2 liter bottle and drop the end of an airpump in it. Float it in my sump for temperature and rubberband it to a pipe so it stays still.
