I personally seem to have heaters fail all the time. Even expensive ones. I don't see why it's hard to make a good one.

You are ALWAYS better off starting with fresh new sand. IME sand has a lifespan and if you start off with used you'll end up replacing it earlier later on. Put new stuff in.

That's a lot of cash for a skimmer. You could get an ASM G3 for around 260 at saltwaterfish.com. I think that's the price.
