I have a Quiet One 3000 pump that I'm using for a closed-loop on my 40g. It's so incredibly quiet that I have to put my ear within a foot of it just to hear it running.

Well, as a compromise, you could put eggcrate just underneath the rocks themselves to distribute weight and not have any under the open sandy areas of the tank. Just a thought.

I actually still have to put the directional elbows on the closed-loop's outputs. I was just in an excited rush to test it out, so that's why the water just pours straight down like that. I will have...

FWIW, I'm going to have a layer of eggcrate under the liverock in my 40g tank I'm setting up just as an extra security blanket for the glass. I don't plan to have any sand-sifting or sand-dwelling...

I'm planning on just 4 or 5 smaller fish. I did already designate a place in the sump for a skimmer, so I may add one down the road as my bio-load increases. At first though, I'm sure it won't be a...

How will the water not travel through the refugium? It will start in the left compartment and end up in the right compartment. That means it has to go through the middle one. It's simple physics. To...

JTEAGUE, the only reason I was initially going to go with MH was because they had the cheaper up-front cost. I could get a 250w MH retrofit kit complete and shipped for about $200. By comparison, the...

12" high tanks are easy to light. You're right, not much room for vertical aquascaping or taller corals, but easy to light. I used to have a 20g long tank (30x12x12) and I liked it alot. IMO and IME,...

-40g breeder
-1" sand bed
-water level 1" from top edge of tank
-means 14" water depth

I'm pretty sure I know the answer, but is a 250w MH just a waste of electricity and money for this shallow...
