Standard screws are actually quite strong. The only problem is that they will rust. Stainless steel screws and or bolts are going to last a lot longer and look nicer.

I have been using the filter sock for years. I wash them in my washer with a little bleach and have had no problems. I also keep two extra sets, and when they are all dirty, I do a group washing.
