You could extend your returns to the top of the water and put loc-lines on it. It wouldn't look the best, but would keep you from having to rely on check valves.

I would look into something like Marc suggested. Man we reefers love magnets don't we?:D If you used round magnets a simple paddle bit could be used to make the mortise for it; then a little epoxy...

Instead of door and worrying with hinges etc. you could just mount your piece of ply with magnets recessed into the ply and 2x4s. Then mount some handles to it so you can just remove the whole thing...
