If it is dry sand, it would likely "seed" at the same rate as the rock, so I can't see why you would use it for your particular application.

Is there any reason you can not do a slower flow through the unit assuming detritus is not enterting with it? I think if I pop this in my sump area, the ideal source, without making me add another...
