Yes. I have hair algae as you described, some here some there. I think if a strain of it gets loose from one area and attaches itself to another, it will keep spreading. :rolleyes:

Sounds like diatom algae which is a sign that there is silica in your tank. If your using tap water you can be adding silica.

from what i've read they prefer to be shaded from direct light. So i would think that if you have very strong lighting like mh, if you placed it in a low light area of your tank, it would be happier....
