This is just me..but I would take out the crushed coral...and replace it with a dsb or bare bottom.. You can do this in less than an hour if you can pump...

now that's the best idea.....take your tap and run it through carbon...this way you're removing chems by not adding more chems.....Given the choices AZDesertRat has the best solution...

Anything that you can add to tap to remove anything that is in the water chemically, the better...

Bare bottom tanks look fine. In fact IMO they look better than using 1-2 inch of substrate... Without starting yet anohter DSB vs BB debate....going bare bottom will not...

Corals can definitely sting but usually that won't cause mushrooms to melt. You'll see a "rough" area where the mushroom is coming in contact with the coral. If nothing is done that one mushroom...

You don't have to wait 8 hours, but i would wait a llittle bit of time to let the new 10gal worth of salt water settle in alittle. I figured you wouldn't mix it unitl you got to your parent's house....

nope....it won't be. you are 100% correct. You should be good for over a year IMO. I didn't start to really have problems (and i can't even prove that it was bio balls) until after the second year.

Go get some of those 5 gal water bottles and put about 20 gal of your water in...

The only thing that i've had that "melted" them was a high or low sal, amonia, and nitrites. The last time this happened to me it was a low salinity level.

FWIW i ran a reef with bioballs until a year ago... i finally broke down and replace the wet dry with the sump w/macro algea..not even a fuge just a sump with loads of macro and I have to say that...
