I have never had a problem with ammonia...
I have never had a problem with ammonia personally. The bacteria takes care of it. What are the other parameters of the water. There are many possibilities of what may have killed your fish.

I have green hair algae that has taken over my tank. I brush it off of the live rock with a tooth brush, and pull out what I can. It goes away for a couple of days, but then comes back a week later...

I use well water. As long as you have a good filtration system installed in your house, its much better than tap actually, since there are far fewer chemicals in it. I always use an RO unit for any...
