I replaced mine with a Gen-X GX2400 Needlewheel pump. Works much better but the skimmer still disappoints. For about $50 (ish) it's a worthwhile upgrade.

I'd seriously take a look at the new Octopus HOB's. I have the 100 with external pump (in tank) in my 55 and this thing pulls out tons of skinmate. Easy to change between wet or dry, easy to clean...
