Why are you pulling so much air into your overflows? If you can reduce the air being pulled in then you shouldn't so many bubbles. This may require revamping the plumbing a little, or a lot.

I could give you a little of both, sand & Chaeto. I also have a swing-arm hydrometer you can have, although I'd urge you to get a refractometer for long term use.
