No problem,

I'm using a 1 micron sediment filter, followed by two chloramine block carbon stages. The membrane is a DOW FilmTech TFC rated at 75 gpd.

I just ran a few silicate tests on my RO/DI water. I tested my feed water, RO water, RODI water, and waste water:

Feed water: 10+ mg/L

RO water: ~0.25 mg/L

RODI water: <0.25mg/L

Waste...

Thanks for the info Boomer, I have the same filmtech membrane in my RO as you posted. I might do some water tests today and compare silica in my feed water to effluent from RO vs. after RO and DI....

Boomer, after getting my head around the passage you posted (somewhat.. :) ), it seems like "CA" membranes do a great job of rejecting colloidal silicates but not so good with the reactive variety....

Wow, I didn't realize there was so much debate about this. I think the best case for not drinking RO/DI water is the bacterial dangers.

In the thread that Howard posted, someone was talking about...

A lot of people think DI water is bad for you because it doesnt have any salts (or electrolytes) so its hypotonic to our cells. This would imply that we lose electolytes by drinking pure water since...

Exactly, its creating calcium chloride (as well as magnesium and strontium salts too), as you said.

As far as running it in-line, I think it could be done; the concentration of HCl will determine...

I think running diluted HCl solution through a reactor with aragonite would be a cool idea. It could put a ton of calcium in solution and would be really low cost since you wouldnt need all the CO2...

Using Food Grade Plastics, Why?

Ive been using the white 'True Value' buckets for a long time to mix salt water for water changes. This weekend was a bit busy, and I let some salt water mix for about 2 days (usually I just do 24...

Thats pretty much the same question in my last post. Its hard to determine if it would be more efficient or not... You could run some numbers to determine the amount of product per volume for both DI...

bertoni, thats a great article for this question... It provides strong evidence that using DI water would work to a degree. It shows that water with a bunch of dissolved CO2 can dissolve quite a bit...

DI water should be at or extremely close to neutral (pH = 7) because there are no ions. Adding CO2 to DI water should drop the pH pretty quickly and I would imagine it would drop faster and lower...

I second that, the silica is surely coming from your make up water. I think a DI cartridge specifically designed for silicate removal would go a long way. In many cases DI units won't completely...

I would suggest running more CO2 through the Ca reactor during the day and less at night. That will help drop your pH during the day and increase the output of your Ca reactor.

70W lamps.. whats the deal?

It's about time for me to change out my 70W HQI metal halide lamp and I've noticed that the selection is really poor. The few options I've found are not cheap either; $70-90 seems about average.
