I don't like full canopies or sealed tanks, heat becomes an issue. There's also retricted access to the tank to deal with.

As pointed out you need good flow and swimming/hiding places for the fish.

Have you checked to see if there's a "whirlpool" forming by the pump intake. If it's cavitating (sucking air) it will make a nasty sound.

GE Silicone 1, 100% silicone is what I've used....
GE Silicone 1, 100% silicone is what I've used. The number 2 has mold inhibitors and you don't want to use that.
