I have dynoflagellates in my tank despite my strict maintenance schedule. I change about 20% of my water each week, I skim aggressively, and I run carbon in a reactor. What more can I do to get rid...

How can I battle dynoflagellates?

I believe I have dynoflagellates in my aquarium. I have some tan/brown translucent globs that sometimes accumulate, plus a tan film that produces bubbles. It's really annoying and it detracts from...

Help with dynoflagellates

Hey All,

Remember that you don't want to directly cool halide bulbs with fans. You can cool parts of your fixture, if possible, with fans, but halides perform better when they are allowed to fully heat up. ...

Of course, you have to acclimate your corals to new lighting conditions, especially when you are increasing intensity. I wasn't suggesting that anyone change their lights to something more powerful...

This should be very nice. In order to recommend some bulbs, let me know what kind of look you're going for. I'm a beginner with T5s, but you might try:

If I understand things correctly, corals use pigments to help shade themselves. So, assuming that I'm not mistaken, you'd get the best actual color with more intense light/par/ppfd. This should be...

like Oliver said, magnetic ballasts have a higher output. I have not experienced much noise, but there was a fan in my ballast box, so I can't say for sure. It wasn't anything annoying, though. ...

Ok. Since you said that your pH is 8.4 right out of the tap, you'll notice that the pH is neutral (7) when it comes out of your RO/DI filter because the pH contributing components have been removed.

Be careful of "sleek", but I understand the desire for good aesthetics. With lighting, your primary concern is getting light to your tank inhabitants. Make sure the reflector meets your needs. A...

A lot has to do with the reflectors, but Sanjay's site will show you what the difference is that actually matters to the coral. An increase in visual intensity isn't necessarily what's important.

Are you stuck on the ARO ballast? I might be in the minority, but I prefer magnetic ballasts. They always put out more intensity. A Radium on an M80 ballast will put out 85 PPFD. That's better...

The amount of light spread is largely due to the reflector. I recently switched to T5s, but I used to use a 250W DE fixture. If I'd ever use halide again, I think I'd go with single-ended bulbs. ...
