There are diferent grades of ruberized sand cloth, if the scratches are deep you can use 400 or 600 grit and move into 1000, 3000, 6000 and 8000 or 12000 grit in steps.

To get any advantage you need to use two membranes of the same capacity.
If you use diferent capacity, then to be able to keep the membranes operating within their specification 4:1...
