You can get the proper grade steel from most welding shops. Just go to the section where they keep their TIG welding rods. You could buy 20 for the price of the cheapest titanium spoke.

Go with the mated 2x6's and if you want an extra measure of reassurance you can add some Knee bracing to the corners. This will add rigidity to the stand and still leave the bulk of the stand open.
