Your pump is pumping more water into the tank than the diameter of the return paths most restrictive element can accommodate. Which in your case seems to be the I.D....

You could use barbed elbows and clear vinyl tubing. Wouldn't look very slick but if you bump into it you won't put any stress on your bulkhead fittings.
