LFS in the Stevens Point area

Hello CWRC from a FVRC (Fox Valley) member. I am planning on being in Stevens Point over the weekend. Can someone rec. a local fish store worth stopping in to in the area? Just starting out in the hobbie and alway looking for good deals on livestock and other goodies.

thanks

scales n tales...

I think fishfirst may work there or did work there. They are on division street I think.....maybe he will chime in. I was to their store when they where in Park Ridge Center in Point a few years back....there also was a pet store in the Center Pointe mall that was pretty sqeamish but they had stuff to look at........lets wait for Fishfirst as he is from point.

Thanks for the (brutally) honest info.

I would like to plan a trip to Dr. FS sometime this year. Do they stock most of the stuff if there catalogs (Dog, cat, fish...)?
Do they have the livestock (fish, invert, and live rock/sand) that are offered on www. liveaquarium.com?

There is Scales and Tails in Point, but like they said, I've been there 3 times and they keep the three SPS's under one CF light strip...... The owner said he planned to upgrade the lighting "sometime". The 210g tank they have setup in the front window looked really nice the last time I was there.

F&S has a big store, they keep a good selection of fish, snails, hermits and corals in there. The also have a lot of the dog/cat/small critter/bird stuff there too. It'd be worth your drive time if you've never been there.

Scales and Tails is in the strip mall off of Busines 51 next to Family Video on the end of the mall, park between the video store and the mall.

Its not worth it since I left... at least thats what I hear from the employees I keep in touch with. Basically the only reason we had anything reef safe was because of me. Tim is obsessed with bringing in things that eat other stuff and he loves to feed feeder goldfish to those fish. I heard he has had multiple outbreaks of algaes as well... blamed it on me even though I don't work there anymore (the coral tank was always filled with hair algae and since I got there I wanted to redo the whole darn thing). Plus things are just overpriced vs. the fox cities and madison and rhinelander. The main tank is pretty nice the last time I was in there still... but its hard to go wrong with a tank I setup such an extensive filtration system for.

Just got back from there, was in Plover this morning. There is a really nice hammer coral there 8 or 9 heads for 52$, everything else is sub-par in my opinion, really bad algae outbreak in the coral tank. The fish tanks were ok, but the dead blasto skeleton covered in algae in the coral tank still from the last time I was in there just killed the deal.

Feeding freshwater feeder fish to anything else other than a freshwater fish is bad for the aggressor. The makeup of salt/brackish/fresh fish is different and can pass internal parasites onto the fish that they normally can not get.

I hope he's not doing that.....

Fishfirst 10/13/2006 02:55 PM

oh he LOOOOVES doing that... even though I've explained to him why NOT to do it. Infact it seems that I've tried to suggest things that would improve things in the store but it just doesn't happen because he forgets or just doesn't plain understand what I'm talking about. And forget about getting honest advise there... he's blantently told me to LIE to customers... even though I would never do that.
The hammer is from a local guy, I can't believe someone hasn't picked that one up yet... its been there for like a month or two.

In light of a better subject I guess... I'm going to be working at the new petco in plover. Its supposed to be an aquatic based store and will have multiple systems of salt and freshwater fish and inverts... or so I'm told. I've also talked to the regional manager for our region and because of my past experience we might be able to try some interesting things for that store... of coarse I'm not holding my breath. I am going to be one of the pet care specialists there so I'll have some say in what goes on and I'll be able to order some things. Hopefully get some not so average corals but I can only speculate until I actually get in there and start working. Hopefully I can set the standards high early.

I guess there is something to see at Scales N' Tails, nothing to buy though but I just caught wind that they had ordered a shark... LOL going to roll my eyes now.

If you go to F&S and don't see something in the retail store but is in the catalog, just ask. They usually have it in the warehouse, and will run and get it for you. And like was already stated, they have a pretty good selection.
