My beautiful new anemone

The local pet store had this beauty marked as an lta so got it for a song.
Well, I don't sing well but you get the idea,
it is Phymanthus Crucifer and doing very well.
Never deflated in transit nor acclimization and settled right in when put in the spot I picked for her.
She has eaten a silverside already and doing terrific.
Here she is.

That is beautiful, Congrats on the find. :)

finding nemo 09/08/2006 08:56 PM

Thanks Osprey, they wer'nt sure about selling it as an lta as I kind of told them it was not one.
But since it was in the tank with them they didnt have a clue as to what it was . Funny thing is , I was looking thru my anemone book a few weeks ago and ran across a picture of them and thought to myself, "self, you need one of those beautys"
The answer was yes you sure do and walla.
Amazing.
I wish I could get a better picture of it however, the striping on it is amazing and much more beautiful then in the pictures.
Will keep trying tho to get some better ones.

OrionN 09/08/2006 09:05 PM

Karen,
Actually it is a Macrodactyla doreensis AKA LTA. It has orange foot. The coloration is also one of the typical coloration for LTA.

2 more in its little cubby hole.
I put her in the 125 gallon

Hi onion, I just looked at the picture I have of that and it looks nothing like that., Do you have a good picture of one so that I can look at it maybe?
I would like to know for sure what it is, altho I was sure I did already;)

Sure is pretty!

finding nemo 09/08/2006 10:07 PM

Thanks Debi, it sure is. Orion. I have looked at the links, several do look just like this one.The one difference is this one looks like a pearl.
Very irridescent color.
Bumpy little bumps all over the foot of it also.
But it sure may be and lta. Just not sure yet.
Will do more searching and thanks for the time you took looking for those links.
Whatever it is I love it. Adds stripes to the tank:)

55semireef 09/08/2006 11:56 PM

nice find

traveller7 09/09/2006 10:46 AM

Nice stripes on that one and good to see it dig in so quickly. Congrats Karen :)

Best method of ID for the suggested species would be a view of the column right under the oral disk. M. doreensis is very distinctive and such a view/picture will quickly ID or eliminate M. doreensis/LTA as a candidate.

fwiw: Phymanthus crucifer (Le Sueur, 1817) is the valid name for the Flower/Rock/Beaded Anemone from the Caribbean. Unfortunately more frequently sold/ID'd under an old, but incorrect name Epicystis crucifer.

fwiw2: You'll find disagreement on the Genus Pymanthus vs Epicystis as well, but normally first name wins.....who knows :D

Fishfreak218 09/09/2006 11:04 AM

oh i like the look of that tank (from what i can see..) can we see a FTS?.. is that a Lemarks Angel or Wantenabi?
nice anemone too!

phender 09/09/2006 11:30 AM

It is a beautiful anemone. I am also pretty confident that it is M. doreensis.
The ones with the vertical stripes are very striking.

MrsDorothy 09/09/2006 01:55 PM

Very nice Karen! Sending you a pm.

finding nemo 09/09/2006 02:26 PM

Hi Traveller, thanks for that info, I cant get a pic under the oral disc. It has settled deap in the rock with just the disc sticking out.
I am pleased it has eaten again today and when the lights came on it opened right up.
I will try to get more pics of it later if I can, one thing I did notice when lifting it out of the bucket after aclimation is that the whole foot is covered in bumps. Felt really strange.
Fishfreak, here is a current picture of the tank and yes your right, it is a Lamark Angel, I love her, such personality.

Elliott

finding nemo 09/09/2006 03:46 PM

HI Elliot, thanks so much. I love the natural look, don't like when things look like they were placed there if you know what I mean.
So happy you like my site. I have had fun with it but sure keeps me hopping with all of the questions about anemones I get from it.
But that is what it is for, to help out.
Thanks

dantodd 09/09/2006 04:10 PM

definately M. doreensis. Looks exactly like mine but it needs to eat alot more because the tentacles are very short right now.

finding nemo 09/09/2006 04:14 PM

Hi Dan, how long should the tenticles be? This one has about 2" tents.
This is a new thing for me, I am a BTA gal;)
So any suggestions and help to keep it happy appreciated.

dantodd 09/09/2006 04:25 PM

Let me try to get a couple pictures of mine. He's up against the front glass which means I can't scrape the sides there very well. I don't want to post pics that make my tank look THAT bad. :O

I think my LTAs tentacles are about 5 or 6 inches long and they get the "corkscrew" effect when I'm feedin him well.
