New to forum and SW

Hello all,

Have had my SW tank up for about 4 months now, and had wondered if there were any local clubs. did a little looking and noticed this one.

As a new person to Salt water tanks I hope I can learn alot from you all.

One of the question I was wondering about is about placement of corals. I have my one piece of Star Polyp on a rock out in front of the tank ( island) the other piece on my base rock for it to cover. I have a mix of Fuji LR and Tonga branch, but was wondering if I should have my leather on the LR. I bought it on a small rockand placed it on the DSP, but was wondering if I can place it on the LR to grow more. the tank is 36x18x24 65 gal tank. I have a 480 watt MH(2x175)/(2x65)PC light, have the MH on for about 6-9 hours a day.

thanks for the help again.

Welcome to URS :D. Always glad to see another buffalo crewmember. As far as your placement of corals, They should be affixed in a spot that best suits their lighting and flow needs. They can be attached to LR, BR, even glass if you're feeling adventurous. My leather is sitting front and center in my tank under medium flow and medium lighting and doing quite well. There are lots of options for attaching corals in precarious positions, but most people use the tried and true super glue gel method. Dries underwater and doesnt harm livestock. Great product :D

ok being a pain as I am working 3rd shift and nothing better to do. Also my cheato doesn't seem to be growing, I have it in the fuge with a DIY light. Grab a light from Home Depot and placed a 50w glow bulb in it. the first bunch of cheato died on me. This second bunch 1/2 died, and other 1/2 doing ok. Is it the lighting? my Nitrates are at 20ppm, I want that down to 0, would be happy to see it to 10. as I can't really spend to much on a new light, wife would kill me. spent enough on my main light.

thoughts? Ideas?

hows the flow?do you leave the light on 24/7?im not sure ..that stuff is hard to kill i thought

jimmer 08/10/2006 12:25 AM

did you type glow bulb instead of grow bulb????ive used 75 watt spotlamps for plants and it worked great

rjweng 08/10/2006 12:26 AM

no I don't leave on 24/7 I normally turn on at night about 8ishPM, and shut of about 9AM. I had low water flow but then put a power head in there.

jimmer 08/10/2006 12:29 AM

might want to try leaving it on all the time.did it turn white when it died off??dont think you need a ton of flow in there.im sure more people will chime in when they wake up:) .there are only a few of us night owls here!!

rjweng 08/10/2006 12:38 AM

yeah it turned white and became stringy almost feathery.I added the power head becuase my water flow was low.

Welcome. beleive me you will learn alott sometimes too much and now you will be 100% addicted to reefkeeping. I have only been here a month or so and my tank has trippled with peoples help and not to mention lots of good deals

Dr.Maybe 08/10/2006 07:18 AM

Hey how is that light fixture working out for you. Seems like a really nice light and good deal. Oh and welcome to URS :)

SkiFletch 08/10/2006 08:16 AM

Yeah, my cheato grows slow, but it grows. I just use one of those 18w compact flourescents... You know, the spiral ones that screw into sockets.

dyeman 08/10/2006 09:14 AM

Welcome rj. Great group of people here, lots of great knowledge and occaisional frag meets give a chance to meet and exchange corals and ideas. My Cheato isn't doing well either so glad you brought up the question.
