Any experience with Blue Line Angelfish? Chaetodontoplus septentrionalis

Does anyone currently have one alive in captivity? Or any past experience or pictures of one in captivity. I've always wanted one of these since I began keeping saltwater fish. It looks like LiveAquaria is now offering them for sale.

no one here has kept one?

No experience, but nice looking fish.

Looks much better in the pic, than the website depiction.

I'm interested too, I stopped by the LFS the other day and they had 3 of these guys in. I did a little research and from what i've read they are sps and clam nippers but are relatively hardy.

t0mmy108 04/12/2006 10:38 PM

as far as nipping, they fall in the same category as some regal angels and blue face angels. I've had pretty good luck with both in a mixed reef tank. it's a hit or miss situation with large angels. I like this fish enough to give it a try.

marrone 04/12/2006 11:44 PM

Actually they're not that hardy and you need to be careful and get a good one as most come in bad condition. They are known to not eat and shouldn't be place with other aggressive angels in the same tank.

It's usually a very expensive angel that doesn't show up that often. I'm not sure I would mail order this fish as you probably would want to see it first in the store and make sure it's eating and doing good.

t0mmy108 04/13/2006 07:55 AM

i'm not too worried about ordering from LiveAquaria. They quarantine thier livestock for two weeks before putting them online for sale. They also guarantee them for 14 days from shipping. The order is fully refundable if the fish doesn't make it through the two week period and the shippng was free. So how was your experience with this fish? Do you have any photos?

BTTRFLYGRL 04/13/2006 08:08 AM

 I have wanted one of those for awhile but you just never see them...They are supposed to be mild mannered and don't get quite as big as other Angels. Dang it!!!! I have a Blueface now, which I love, but I did so want a Blueline:(

marrone 04/13/2006 08:28 AM

I don't have any photo but my experiences has been when they've come into LFS. Most haven't arrived in good conditions while the ones that have usually haven't eaten at all or just a little. The usually haven't faired well and after a # of weeks they're usually very thin and on their last leg. They're very shy and even placed with non-aggressive fish didn't seem to do very well.

Even with the 2 week guarantee I would still want to check out the fish before I buy it and make sure it's in good condition as the fish could last for over 2 weeks and then die. If possible I would try and find one that has been at a place for awhile as there is a better chance it will make it.

t0mmy108 04/13/2006 08:35 AM

well, the order was placed last night already. If the fish is available and is in good health, they should ship out today. I'll post pictures and probably keep it seperated from the rest of the fish for a while during the acclimating proccess. I hope I get a nice and healthy one.

marrone 04/13/2006 08:39 AM

Good luck hopefully you'll get a good one that is a nice size.

I ordered one today, 4/13, myself from LiveAquaria. I had one last year that was just gorgeous. I lost it to an aquascaping accident last year. I bought it from JustRareFish.com along with a Chrysurus juvi angel. It did not bother any of it's tankmates or inverts. It was about 5" when I received it. They grow to about 9" in the wild.

Here is a pic of my previous Blueline I put in the Photo Gallery at JustRareFish.com.

There is also a video of the same fish in the Photo Gallery. Here is the link, Photo Gallery.

t0mmy108, I called in my order this morning and they still had the mediums available. So you should have one on the way. I was also "assured" they were eating.

t0mmy108 04/13/2006 03:17 PM

sweet. I like the video. I always wondered if the colors in all these photos were accurate. your picture is awsome. So would you say that your old blue line was a female? I read that they have bolder lines than males.

Tremelle 04/13/2006 04:05 PM

Yes, I would say I had a female. Not because of the bolder colors. I have read the males have a bluer face. It had some of the prettiest color. The pic doesn't do it justice.

t0mmy108 04/13/2006 07:58 PM

i just got an email from Liveaquaria saying that they ran out of stock and won't be shipping my fish out. oh well. I'll try again next time.

jnfallon 04/13/2006 08:06 PM

Hah, next time order it, and then tell all of us about it. :)

t0mmy108 04/13/2006 08:09 PM

Tremelle, are you getting yours? They should have shipped out all the orders by now.

marrone 04/13/2006 08:11 PM

It's a pretty rare fish I guess they didn't have that many probably to start with. Tough lucky but some times things work out for a reason.

michindi 04/13/2006 08:17 PM

phishybusiness is getting some in. you should check them out

Tremelle 04/13/2006 09:36 PM

I have not received that email. I did place my order over the phone. The lady taking the order verified it was in stock, as well as an Orange Spotted Blenny. My fish are suppose to be delivered on Saturday. The customer service rep also said I will receive an email Friday evening with the shipment tracking number. I will wait and see if it comes.

JustRareFish.com has a couple. The medium is $225, and $250 for the large. MarineCenter.com also has one or two for $275. I purchased my first one, as well as my Chrysurus, from JustRareFish. They arrived in great shape.

Seafood Tank 04/14/2006 02:37 AM

I had one now already kept for 11 months, eats like a pig.

XtrmCHoPZ 04/14/2006 04:02 AM

I had a blueline for about a year. Unfortunately he somehow injured one of his eyes, it kept getting worse, and eventually it led to his death.

Besides that when the fish was alive he was very active, somewhat aggressive and ate a lot of mysis , krill and pellets.
I got him from a LFS in town that doesnt have the best reputation, but they always order fish that others wont. Example, they have a 10-12" Black long nosed tang for $300. But no one in my town will buy it. Anyways they have had 5 bluelines in the past year. 2 of them were pretty much full grown around 9". Also all of them were very thin and I had to quarantine mine forever.

Tremelle 04/15/2006 12:28 AM

t0mmy108, I got the confirmation email today stating it would be delivered tomorrow, Saturday. I was out of town until Friday noon, so I requested the Saturday delivery. I guess LiveAquaria does not check online orders regularly. In your post you stated you ordered from them on Wednesday evening. I ordered mine over the telephone with a customer service rep on Thursday morning around 9:15 am. It appears that maybe the way to order from them if it is a small quantity fish. I will post pics of it when it arrives to document it's condition right out the bag. Now I just hope the Chrysurus doesn't pick on it too much.

t0mmy108 04/15/2006 01:28 AM

quote from Live Aquaria:
"Dear Tom Tran,
We are unable at this time to fill your order number A2482641.
New shipments arrive at our holding facility daily, so we will process your
order as soon as possible. We will send you an e-mail on the day of shipment
that will contain a shipping tracking number. "

I replied that I will be out of town from the 17th till 21st in Las Vegas and asked them not to ship anything during that week. Today, i recieved a reply:

"Thank you for your e-mail. We have sent this information on to our Vendor to hold your shipment until after that date.
Thank you for choosing Drs. Foster & Smith Live Aquaria for your live aquatic needs. You are a valued customer and we look forward to hearing from you in the future.
If we can be of any additional assistance, please feel free to contact our Live Aquaria Department at 1-800-334-3699 or via e-mail at customerservice@liveaquaria.com and we will be happy to answer any question(s) you may have.
Sincerely,

Technical Support
Drs. Foster & Smith"

I also noticed one for sale in the "Diver's Den" section for a higher price but is not showing they are available in the general "Large Angefish" section. I hope they come through with the order when I get back in town. All I ordered were two of the blue lines.

Tremelle 04/15/2006 11:34 PM

The Blueline made it safe and sound. When I opened the bag, it was sticking it's mouth out the water. It almost seemed like it was running out of oxygen. As I drip acclimated it, it settle down and did not stick it's mouth out the water anymore. The fish has great color and is about 5" in length. My 5" Chrysurus and 4.5" Purple tang are not too crazy about their new tankmate, but the 4" Blonde Naso could careless. The Blueline stays out of the way of the Chrysurus, but still explores the whole tank. It ate with the rest of the fish when I fed them tonight. It also ate off of the nori I have clipped in the tank. I also dropped in some flake and it ate it as well. Hopefully things will be alittle more settle with the aggression from the Chrysurus and the Purple tang.

From the reading I have done on the Blueline, I would say this is a male. The males are suppose to have more blue in their face. If you look at the previously posted fish in this thread you can see the difference.

Here are some pics of the Blueline. It is hard to get a good shot of it since it is alittle camera shy. The first pic is of it in the acclimation bucket.
