How big is your Giga?

I have a large lagoon set up in my basement, i just put in a giga clam about 5", anybody have any luck with these getting real big in the tanks and in what time frame. saw one at the zoo aquarium that was 30" plus.

capt. insano 01/15/2006 10:19 AM

several people here have grown theirs to 14" plus in relatively little time (a couple of years)

I bought a small guy (3") and he has already grown 1/4" of new shell in only a couple of weeks

How about some pics!

They grow so fast you can see new shell growth every couple weeks. I got a blue eyed and it has grown almost an inch in a month. I didn’t no they grew that fast, I will eventually have to move all my rock out of the way.

Not Really a Gigas. . .

OK, I know this isn't a Gigas, but I've had this Derasa for 5+ years and it's. . .well, big.

Nice Clams!!

Lesd your Clam not is a Gigas, its a Derasa.

lesd 01/23/2006 12:02 PM

Nax, re-read my first post. But thanks for (re)clarifying.

I have no idea how to measure a clam, but the derasa is at least 12" long. Probably more like 14".

Here's mine, in the background of this photo. It's about 8 or 9 inches now. It has a one inch growth rim on him.

I have had a gigas for about 1week and a half and I notice its mantle doesn't extend as far out as other species of clams (derasa, crocea, squamosa..etc not counting Hippo) is it normal for gigas?

My derasa is in the tank diagonally so I can't just place a tape measure on the front pane of the tank and measure. The way I measure mine is I use the straight side of a box, level, or anything flat and straight on one side. Place whatever you use on the top of the tank and look down the side of it so that you can see just the very end/edge of what you want to measure down below in the tank. Mark this spot on the top of the tank and then go to the other end/edge of what you are measuring and look down the straight edge until you see just the edge of the other side. Mark this spot and then measure the distance between the two and you have your measurement.

I had one grow from 3" to about 25" in < 7 years under 400watt 10 K.

smcnally 01/30/2006 06:55 PM

Not a Gigas, but here's a picture of my Squamosa. It's a little over 10"
