Anyone put a 70w MH in a 12gal nanocube hood?

Hello gang,
I am just wondering, can it be done, or is the temp too much?
I have never had problems with halide overheating a tank before but I have never tried to enclose a halide in a hood before.
Any discouragement/encouragement is appreciated.
Cheers,

- Chad

The mh on my 24 nano creates less heat on top than the two PC's, but then again i had heat problems with the 12g dx because of the splashguard. I had to drill 2 holes on it. You would have to do some trial and error, without any livestock inside of course. But i think it could be done.

I have 175 MH over my 10 gallon Nano. Looks sweet!

150W DE over my 12g nano. No way would I enclose it in a hood - dangerous!

Thanks for the input guys!
My current tank is a 2gal with a 70w de over it. Even at 35 halide watts/ gallon I never had a problem with temp but now that I want to put one in an enclosed hood, I am expecting that I will need to do some problem solving...

i have my 15g, (same footprint as a 10g, just 18in tall) setup with 1-175wMH, 2-18w Actinics and 1-3in exhaust fan, ALL ENCLOSED in a 15in high canopy. Temp sits at 79 all day.

If done right, you'll have no problem. Mines been running for 1.6yrs now.

Here is a tank shot for ya.

I did it and documented the mod at nano-reef.com. All up, less than $300 and 3 hours of your time.

It's a long read, but I finally got to a temperature stable configuration.
In the process I figured out how keep the whole system cool (not just the hood, but the tank/water). Ran the system fine through summer ;)

Being inspired by artarmon and others at NR, I did the 70w upgrade to my 24g as well. One note of caution. Make sure that the fans you install in the hood are on separate power supplies. If one fails, you'll still have some form of air movement in the hood. If you're lucky, all you'll get is a warped splashguard.
