ozone from UV sterilizer

i remember reading about ozone being a by-product of UV sterilization...so i connected the venturi tube from my skimmer to my sterilizer..to draw air/ozone from around the uv tube with in the quartz sleeve...are there any drawbacks to doing this..? and is it ok to use silicone tubing?or does it react with the ozone? any help is appreciated...thanx....shaun

I hope someone will respond to this, since I have the same question. I have a good, but un-needed UV lying around, and have been wanting to add ozone to my skimmer.

Sorry, but you wont get any ozone from your sterilizer.
The lamps used for UV sterilization peak at 253nM, and the Ozone lamps peak at 185nM.
Years ago, I thought the same thing and even drew up a plan to build a big combo unit. Glad I found that info beforehand:)
They DO make lamps now that have the 2 different types of glass (thats what determines the spectrum on the UV lamps) together, so it puts out a small amount of O3, and a small amount of UVC. So its possible to have your cake and eat it too:) Reduced output of each over a full length lamp of either spectrum, obviously.
They are spendy lamps, though. Purpose built for air treatment, where VERY little ozone is wanted.
HTH,
Chris
