I'm amazed there is that many Mantis in one tank without a boxing match breaking out.

Ti 01/04/2008 01:34 AM

yeh those are edible
lol
Where is the address for this place
lol

Robert4025 01/04/2008 01:48 AM

I read somewhere once that Mantis supposed to be one of the smartest shrimp around so if this is true I am sure they were trying to figure out how to avoid being in the boiling pot than winning the match. Although the one in the middle of the tank think otherwise and seems to be trying to land a KO.:D

FinalPhaze987 01/04/2008 01:50 AM

Im sure thats how most people felt when they had Balut on fear factor...

happyface888 01/04/2008 03:21 AM

Woah, very interesting are those mantis's stuck in the bottles?

delsol650 01/04/2008 04:20 AM

They're also eaten in other countries and some grey/drab ones grow to at least a foot.

Mantis shrimp actually tastes very good (the one I've tried is the one displayed in the pic above). That type of mantis shrimp is also called "Peeing Shrimp" (translated the word from Chinese to English). It is a common food in my hometown in Indonesia, but more famous as a delicacy food in HongKong.

Well, it never hurts to try one =D

GreshamH 01/04/2008 12:38 PM

I see nothing but shrimp and abalone. Wheres the slugs you speak of :)

IIRC our local "ghost shrimp" is one of the largest mantis and is quite well known for it being extremelly tasty.

I would eat both ab or mantis in a heart beat. Don't bash the guy for not wanting to et it, it leaves more for us Elite

If you like lobster, you'll LOVE mantis, it's far tastier IMO. Abalone is just heaven on earth :)

For real? They are called peeing shrimp? I missed a chance to eat one along time ago on a trip and I had no clue they called them that. And the picture above is that store around here or is that in a different country?

radiolunatic 01/04/2008 02:21 PM

Actually it is also a delicacy in Japan. I got a chance to eat it raw over there as sushi menu. Very tasty!
One time I took my wife (she is Japanese) to Atlantis Aquarium and they had some mantis for sale. I said wow it's beautiful and she said wow, look's tasty. The same when we went to Monterey Aquarium, we saw big tuna and she said wow I saw sashimi swimming around.
So maybe I should not put any clam & urchin on the tank as I am affraid it will end up in our dinner table. :)

Too funny, Roy :)

That is like the zoos in China. Supposedly, the signs on the animal displays have in addition to natural history info, comments like, "Very tasty!" :)

Uni... my favorite sushi :p~

:) The joke that I heard is the only thing Chinese won't eat are table on the land, airplane on the air and submarine in the water. Well, I am guilty of this one too.

Wow ... I love uni too. It is kind of love or hate thing, nothing on the middle. My fav are uni, amaebi, toro and mirugai ..
Now I am hungry :)

Definitely. Mantis Shrimp is sweeter for some reason. Wish there was a restaurant around here that served it. I nearly blew $80 on a large zebra at a Sac LFS to see if I could recreate the dish:p

jedininja 01/04/2008 05:00 PM

I've had both my fair share of mantis and abalone. Both foods to die for. When I was working in hong kong, I ate mantis like twice a week.

I have ran across mantis at a restaurant in Milpitas before. They were called squillas on their menu I think. Didnt order it though. They said market price and when asked, market price was $75 a pound.

Compare to LFS that is pretty cheap .. I'm sure you get at least 2 or 3 mantis :p ..

I think we're making Robert feels bad for not trying them :D ..
