2 questions for anyone who wants to comment

1st question What salt are you using and why. The reason I ask I started out using Kent salt and it seemed great. I ran out and had to get Instant Ocean and it seems I had to use twice as much for the same amount of water.

2nd question What type filter media (if any) are you using on your overflow where it dumps into the sump. Meaning are you using a filter sock, another type filter, or nothing at all?

Thanks guys.

Instant Ocean here, Its fairly cheap and i can find it everywhere, Never had a problem with it.
As for filter media I use none I just dump the water from the overflow straight into the chamber for the skimmer.

tropic marine reef-sea salt--works great and it's all i have ever used
my overflow is a CPR and it has a sponge over the drop tube.

MG426 does your overflow hose run into the water in the sump or stop short? I have a filter sock on mine and if I remove it the return is too loud with the water leaving the tubing and hitting the water in the sump.

I use Coralife Salt, I switched after receiving a bad batch of salt from Instant Ocean. ( It had unusually high content of ammonia, I'm assuming something got into the salt and contaminated the salt.) Issue was resolved from IO.

My overflow is a CPR and I use a 200 micron filter sock going into my sump.

1) Tropic Marin

2) no overflow I am running a UGF with CC

Instant Ocean 4.3 oz/gallon @ 1.025 100micron sock changed every other day. 4 different mixed reef tanks.

What do you all think of Red Sea Coral Pro Salt? Looks like it has pretty good specs.

Is that 4.3 oz by weight or by volume?

4.3oz by weight. I mix 40g at once and have pre-measured packages ready to go. I also drip 2-part Natureef. Alk 10.8dkh Cal 440-460ppm.

swisha 01/03/2008 10:14 PM

Reef Crystals Salt - Higher Ca and Alk than IO Salt
Cotton Filtersock - Changed every 3 days

Tropic Marin for me. Filter floss in my overflow which I change every 3 days.

I use a box that is placed in the sump, overflow tube connects to the top, below that is egg crate I set a piece of cut to size pillow batting on then the water flows through the botton on to the skimmer then return pump.

I am very happy with it, looks cool, and aireates the water also.

Instant Ocean and Oceanic. No complaints. I do not use filter media.

dileggi 01/03/2008 11:18 PM

Oceanic . Not sure why. I believe that's what was recommended when I started the tank up.

Filter floss
