zebra eel cave

think this will work? i will stack the rock around it and have a few "entrances", or would it be better to just leave 1?
the PVC cave measures 20" long, 10" wide, 8" high.

what do you think?

might not see your eel a whole lot except at feeding time>>?

cyclops23 01/03/2008 02:33 AM

i've read that the zebras spend more time out in the open when they get used to their surroundings. plus it's a sweet looking eel:)

splateee 01/03/2008 08:58 AM

I had two zebras and both were rarley out in the open. They also would just come out enough to eat.

LisaD 01/03/2008 09:36 AM

I have had mine many years, it prefers to stay under cover too. It comes out only to eat.

That looks like 1" pipe, might need larger daimeter for a Zebra.

LisaD 01/03/2008 10:35 AM

Why would that be if the rocks are stacked on top? Do you think the eel would knock it over?

RayAllen 01/03/2008 11:22 AM

1" Pipe is plenty. Id drill holes in the rocks and zip tie them down and you will be good to go. I too am thinking about getting a Zebra for my 210g; I currently have a 1.5" thick approx 20" Snowflake so I want to get him/her a buddy.

cyclops23 01/03/2008 01:57 PM

i've wanted one for 3 years now and i finally have a tank big enough to get one. i guess i'll just have to feed it a lot so i can see it ;)

RayAllen 01/03/2008 02:01 PM

You here diffrent things on how ofter they eat. My Snowflake eats everyday; when I feed my triggers and wrasses shrimp and clams it comes write to the top of the tank and eats from my hands. Really cool animals.

I would make it shorter. My zebra eel seems to like spaces that are really small and tight. I would also have many openings.

Pete 01/03/2008 08:26 PM

I agree, unless you are buying a juvenile, the 1" pipe is too small. You will have to uproot it in a year. Save yourself the headache and get it at least 1.5" if not bigger. The last zebra I had was 2-2.5" thick after a couple of years.

welsher7 01/03/2008 11:06 PM

I don't think the pipe itself is the cave. I think the OP is going to use the pvc structure as a base to stack liverock around and on.

jrkayakin 01/03/2008 11:13 PM

Looks great, the eel will love it, mine finds nooks and crannies i dindnt even know were there , i feed mine a emerald crab today for the first time , man was that cool watching him eat it :D

cyclops23 01/04/2008 01:30 AM

yeah, the pipe framework is domething to stack the rock around, not for the eel to swim through.
do you really think it should be shorter? i made it that tall so that the eel would have room when it grows.
thanks!

LisaD 01/04/2008 11:03 AM

I think its fine as it is. the only reason to make it shorter might be to make it more stable to be sure it doesn't topple when/if the eel shifts some rock.

cyclops23 01/04/2008 02:41 PM

it's pretty stable. the PVC is schedule 60 or 80, i don't remember. either way it's pretty strong.

do you think i should silicone it together so no water can get trapped inside it? i might do it anyway to add to the strength.
