beautiful fish where did you get them at?

zemuron114 12/31/2007 06:41 PM

the first pic is pretty close to a supermale. True supermales will have a bright purple outline on the tail and dorsal fin (as well as belly fin)

the first "female" you posted is definitely a male though. the dead give away is the yellow on the face and the extended anal fin. There shouldn't be any fighting (im assuming the actual male is larger??) Watch the 2 males closely, large male flames dont like other male flames.

I would consider selling the smaller male (you could buy 2 females for the price you get for the one male!!)

SPS Addiction 12/31/2007 08:01 PM

really another male? i was told a super female. is it a sub male? no fighting at all between them. and the male is larger but not by that much, maybe an inch. i bought them from LA divers den

snorvich 12/31/2007 08:43 PM

Live aquaria called that a super female? None of these is a supermale. The closest one is a male that is changing but is not a terminal male. The last picture is a female. The first female is actually, as zemuron said, a changing male.

SPS Addiction 12/31/2007 10:02 PM

the first one is a full male correct?

zemuron114 01/01/2008 01:21 PM

the first pic is a very nice male, not a full terminal male though. the second one looks like a male that already changed. i have never heard of a super female before... if there is no fighting then you are fine :)

enjoy these beauties! keep the temp a little lower to :)

bradleyj 01/01/2008 01:43 PM

Mine is just a young male, only 3-4 inches, but is getting along great with others.

ok, so the one with the most yellow is not a male??? its a changing male and the pic of the first supposed female is actually a full male? the one with th emost yellow is the largest of the 3 at about 5 inches. im completely confused now. seems all of my wrasses change sexes on me!

zemuron114 01/02/2008 01:13 AM

no, other way around. Flame wrasses with more yellow is closer to a supermale. The FIRST pic is the more definite male :)

ok, thats what i thought but wasnt sure i was reading everything correctly. and ive had 3 trios where 1 of the females turned male.

snorvich 01/02/2008 09:29 AM

If you think wrasses are bad, Genicanthus angels can change from female to male and back. At least terminal male wrasses cannot change back.

SPS Addiction 01/03/2008 08:16 PM

contacted LA and they are looking into it. they will post here or i will with their response.

SPS Addiction 01/07/2008 04:25 PM

LA contacted me and took care of the issue of sending 2 males. thanks guys for pointing that out to me. otherwise i may have had a more serious problem because i thought it was a female .

zemuron114 01/07/2008 05:31 PM

you scored since they sent you 2 males!!! males are worth way more :)

SPS Addiction 01/07/2008 07:53 PM

still im short a female and have to find somewhere for this guy...oh well things happen

Fairy Wrassler 01/08/2008 12:45 AM

I have a trio of Port Vila Fairies with a male, submale and female that are very happy together. I also had a trio of rosefascia with a definite supermale where one of the 2 females was more "male" than the other.

Chooch1 01/08/2008 11:57 PM

If terminal males can't revert back to female, can they revert back to becoming a non-terminal male? I ask the question because IME male fairy wrasses such as C. solorensis or C. scottorum and others have the tendency to fade in color which would indicate they are no longer a terminal male.
