Take lots of photos! I take hundreds everyday. Woo hoo for digital! You can play with your DOF. Try different settings and see what works, but every photo will be different which makes it fun and frustrating! I think your off to a good start! Good Luck!

That is a great shot- especially 'cause those fish are so shy usually.
Were it in my tank I'd try that same shot but a little wider so the fishes eyes/face end up in the top left third of the frame. Right now he's a little too close to the edge of the frame, and his tail is nearly touching the frame- a little more room would've been perfect. The subject is sharp and everything else is soft- that is awesome. The sand is overexposed but the subject is not... welcome to the challenges of aquarium photography :p Your options are either to underexpose the image and then brighten the subject on the computer, or use a flash. A flash will help balance out the overall exposure. Using a flash correctly takes some practice and to get the best results you need to get the flash off the camera, so with most point and shoots it's more trouble than it's worth-- one of the reasons people move on to dslr's.

thanks for the help, I will keep trying with different framing! I need to cool the spending for a couple of weeks, so no separate flash is going to happen anytime soon.
