plumbing for a sump?

So I am in the process of setting up a 38gal with a 20l for my sump. I am installing an internal overflow drilling the back for the plumbing. My question is on the plumbing for the overflow inside the tank. Where should i drill the hole for the bulkhead? Top, Middle or in between? What I am thinking for in the tank is coming out of bulkhead and just put a 90 pointing down. Do I need to drill a hole in the top of the 90 to get the siphion going or no? Any links with some pics would help out a lot. Thanks!

instead of a 90, go with a T. on the submerged part of the T attached some PVC and cut some slits on the side to act as a filter.

on the raised part of the T which will be above water, cut 3" or so of PVC and attach it to the T and add a cap to it. Drill a hole into the cap.

i can post pics later tonight.

also how close to the top of a tank can you drill.

a few inches from the top and sides will be fine.

also, the higher you drill the louder the drain pipe will be. mine is current about 3/5ths the up from the bottom. you can place it anywhere you want for the most part.
