True Percula or Not?
 

I would like to find out if what was sold to me 8 months ago as wild caught True Perculas are actually, well True Perculas.

I have been told by more folks than not who have seen them that they are, but recently there has been an individual who claims that they are not True Perculas and are in fact, False Perculas (osellaris).

As soon as I was told that these were not true percs, I started looking on-line and found a few articles that cover this subject (aparently it is a popular one). All of the articles that I found pointed to the fact that mine were a pair of True Percs, but I really want to get some CMAS feedback.

It's not easy to count spines but with the pics you posted, definately look true.

nice looking.....but not true to me

its hard to appreciate much detail in the photos without flash, because the fish are lit with backlight, which makes the background bright and the fish somewhat dark. its kind of like shooting a photograph of someone standing before a sunset, and you get a nice sunset and a silhouette of the person. maybe if you could get photos with flash that have the light shining on them from behind you, instead of from behind them, it would be easier to see their coloration, spines, etc.

only one of the flash photos shows good dorsal spines - one of them is obscured by a rock.

i'm not trying to complain, i know how hard it is to get good photos.

i think that the black bands look dark enough / broad enough to be true percs if they are young. how old are your fish? if they're true percs the dark bands should broaden with age.

Kind of looks like 11 spines....

Regardless of some pics that may suggest true percula, it looks like a nice, wild-caught, ocellaris. IMO.

I'll trade you for true percs if you would like.

They are beauties, why worry what they are unless you were overcharged.

Just enjoy them.

p.s. All too often do ocellaris get sold as perculas. Which is likely the case in this situation. Happy Reefing.

I could be wrong again but I was wondering, will percs host a carpet anemone, I didn't think they would?

The most common natural host for percs is S.gigantea.

What was a superbee?

Barracuda was dodge, right?

I realize there is a difference, but he bought them 8 months ago, so I say just enjoy them.

Any car or truck that can do a good burnie or a wheelie is cool in my book. :smokin:
