Ponape Birdsnest Care?

I've been wanting a frag of this for some time now. Well, today while looking in my tank I notice a pink 1" frag encrusted on a plug growing into a green stylo frag on the same plug! Oopps. So I guess I do have a frag ;)

Chiseled them apart and re-mounted both pieces.

Can someone give me some advice on the Ponape placement? Currently it's sitting halfway up the tank under 14k 250DE Phoenix bulbs in medium flow.

And that's the weird story for the day ;)

Thanks

Mines on the bottom out of direct flow. Growing great. Lighting 250xm 10k DE.

I keep my colony down low on the bottom in lower light. In high lighting they usually bleach.

I would love to see some pics of this coral in other tanks, mine looks pathetic, good polyp extension but poor color. I'll move it down and see how it does.

Mine is placed close to the bottom of the tank, approximately 30" away from the lights. It is growing faster with better colorations.

Heres mine. It has grown since this pic. Mid to lower in the tank under 2x150w 14k MH only.

the lower you keep it the greener it will become

I'm confused. You have a pink frag and a green stylo on the same plug and that somehow makes a Ponape Birdsnest? What am I missing?

Purple Haze 10/14/2007 01:33 AM

lol. It was a mistake that I mounted two different pieces on the same plug ;) I, for some reason, when they were waiting to be mounted, thought they were the same piece so I put them on the same plug.

Thanks for the suggestions.

So did you realize that you got a frag of the Ponape Birdsnest before or is the pink frag a regular pink birdsnest? Just wondering because the first paragraph is pretty confusing. I really like the Ponape one. I personally think it is a different species than most of the other BN out there. I don't know how to spell it but I think the species is Seriatopora dentriticta. Super cool coral.

Nice pics. You have a nice sized colony going Brian. Hows the tank doing?

Interesting.

I always thought birds nest liked high light and high flow.

I've got a large wild colony of hot pink birdsnest with yellow tips that I've been trying to get colored up.

Bottom of the tank eh?

My Ponape BN likes lower to med. light with good indirect random flow.

Okay, it was way too late when I posted that.

I acquired 13 or so different frags from a friend about a month ago and I had forgotten I had him cut a small piece of this for me--the Ponape. I can't believe I mounted the Stylo and the Ponape on the same plug ;)

It is definitely the Ponape. I'm looking forward to seeing the three small frags grow out as they're already a light pink versus my Birdsnest being a more red color.

Thanks for the info.

You can really see the growth.

Dentritica.

If I remember correctly ponape birdsnest is from ponape islands where it was found in low light. Most green or pink birdsnest will like hight light but the ponape likes low light and it will turn yellow/green with purple tips.
