Recipe, or is it?

I was reading a few article about a cheaper, less inexpensive way to add to your tank, than buying this additives and supplements.

I read that borax can increase pH if you add correctly. Have anyone tried this? It sounds to good to be true, but I'm not sure if it is...

Second, I also read that Limewater (kalk.) increase calcium. Is that try? will it increase alkalinity? upset pH?

Any other cool recipes for calcium, pH, alkalinity, strontium, etc...?

Borax would serve as a source of borate, which would tend to peg the pH at 8.3. I wouldn't use it in a reef tank, because borate can't be used by corals for their skeletons and makes alkalinity testing an issue. For a fish-only system, I'd probably use SeaChem Marine Buffer, which is a borate alkalinity supplement. Commercial borax might be okay, but I wouldn't trust it without some analysis.

Limewater will add calcium and alkalinity, and there's a recipe for DIY 2-parts (like B-Ionic) on the page that's linked above.

Here's an article on choosing a supplementation:

And here's an article on homemade balanced supplements:

I gave a talk to our reef club last night about reef chemistry, and passed out some articles and summaries from Randy Farley and myself which condense much of the info on Reef Central. They describe chemicals you either want to add or remove, all of which you need to be monitoring. Here's the link to those documents:
