some macros w/ the 40D & 150mm
the liveview function on the 40D is super cool with macro photography. while using the XTi, i could never tell if i got the polyps in focus....thus it was mostly luck when trying to crop pics for super macro shots.
the liveview makes that super easy, as you can actually digitally zoom into the picture on the screen to see if your polyps are in a perfect focus. very neat feature! the image quality is crystal clear.....much sharper than the XTi IMO. however, i felt like i lost allot of vividness after converting the images from RAW to JPEG...and then cropping and downsizing them. :( looks like i need to get a more up to date photo editing program..... the RAW images just absolutely blew me away! Wow! Great pictures :) The color and sharpness are spot on.
This is one way to look for red bugs... |
Thats niiiiiiice.

Oh, I've been lusting after that camera body for a while now, and you've just made it worse. :) Thanks!

Very nice. A few of them look a tad oversharpened, though.
|
thanks everyone.

Very nice, was lens was that taken with? I will have to explore that liveview soon......
How do you make that camera focus on the whole picture rather then just a point? I would love to have the entire photo focused on the coral of fish I am tacking a picture at times. |
I love the live view on my 40D. Do you have the live exposure simulation turned on. It will adjust the lcd to show how the picture will expose while you change settings.

Oh and nice shots.

Great shots!

the lens is the Sigma 150mm macro telephoto. in order to focus on a larger area, you need a higher depth of field.....but that comes with a price as you sacrifice some of the sharpness. there are also ways to photo stitch lots of pics together to get one ultra sharp image.....but thats beyond my processing abilities as this current time. |

Looks like you had your atinic's only on.
nope, don't have any actinics. just run a 250w radium on HQI ballast. white balance is set to auto, but sometimes i'll adjust the RAW image to a color temp of 10k if there is too much blue haze in the sand/back wall/or acrylic, but i normally only do that for a full tank shot. as the auto white balance is pretty darn close to what i see in person. as far as settings go, i just shoot in aperture priority, anywhere from f/5.6 to f/9, ISO always at 100 when shooting in aperture priority and a tripod. then i use things such as mirror lock, long exposure noise reduction etc which are custom settings. |
Looks like I went alittle over board with the camera, I thought my Canon G1 was the sizzle back in the day.......

waow, that's some gorgeous pics, thanks for sharing!! The clarity is amazing, and the colours are lovely lovely lovely...
congrats! ;) hope to see lot more! |

Do you have any pics of fish? I havent seen any pics of fish from you. I wish I had corals that vibrant and "still", then all I'd have to do is just place my aperture to f/9-16 and let it sit on a tripod to capture.

not with that camera and lens combination. i do have some fish pics with the XTi and 18-55mm kit lens. nothing spectacular.....i need more practice with shooting in AI Servo and Tv mode stuff. Yea dont worry... those fish shots will get better with practice in time. I'd play with the manual option more. Set the Shutter speed between 1/25 to 1/100 with aperture at f/5.6-8 and ISO at 100-200 and tell me how your results are? I been getting clean crisp shots with settings around those, but if your hands arent steady you might have some trouble. Have fun.
