fed my fish some banana....

off an impulse I fed my fish a few small peices of banana the other day. they werent sure what to do with it at first and then a few of them ate it all up. have any of you ever fed your fish banana? just wondering if it could cause any harm......

TyeAndersonII 07/21/2004 10:50 AM

bananas are not a natural food source in the ocean. Your fish's digestive system might not break it down, but i guess you will find out soon want happens. let us know!!!

bigevill 07/21/2004 12:41 PM

well, I had read in a few places that people have fed other fruits to their fish and I figured what the heck......I have seen pics of people feeding oranges to there tangs. all is fine in the tank days later.......

rehren 07/29/2004 02:08 PM

i've heard of feeding brocolli and other green veggies to their tangs...

bigevill 07/29/2004 02:33 PM

yeah, whim is what caused me to do it, and all is good. maybe I will try it again some day......

luvmyreef 07/30/2004 09:50 PM

I feed my Tangs broccoli green leaf lettuce and zuccinni. My sister said she fed her hermits a grape and I freaked out and said that was not a natural source of food u will kill your tank 4 sure...but then I thought neither is zuccinni, but the book said it was ok. Who really knows without trial and error...Let us know. Crazy cyano spike or other crazy abnormal stuff might be because of it.

I would avoid fruits, as they contain natural sugar, but I'd expect the green veggies to be okay.
With the availability of nori, I don't see much need for them though. Why feed something foreign?

luvmyreef 07/31/2004 03:16 PM

Much cheapper is most of the reason. Plus it is always fresh

Saltz Creep 08/01/2004 09:17 PM

You should feed bananas to gorilla crabs.
And it's a plus if they die from it.

snobanker 08/01/2004 09:46 PM

Isn't "Tang" an orange flavored instant drink anyway??? ...sorry couldn't help it;)

Mishri 08/08/2004 08:45 PM

i tried feeding my 10 clown loaches bannana once (read that they liked it) but they ignored it.. dunno about any sw fish though.

scrummyotool 08/12/2004 07:15 PM

wow all this time ive been feeding my shrimp york pepermint patties.

daytona955 08/13/2004 01:21 PM

The vitamins that people feed corals and such are not necessarily natural, the broccli is not natural but if it has the same nutrients, go for it.

bigevill 08/13/2004 01:22 PM

I would say 80% of the content of most flake foods that people feed are not natural.......

Saltz Creep 08/13/2004 04:07 PM

80% unatural? Let's see some proof.

bigevill 08/13/2004 04:28 PM

wheat doesnt grow in the ocean does it? all of the vitamins they put in them???

jay24k 08/14/2004 03:03 PM

Well alot of the medicines and stuff we eat are not natural either but it is healthy for us. Just because it isn't in a fish's natural enviroment doesn't mean it's bad. Remember when people thought tomatos were poisonous? :)

easttn 08/14/2004 06:43 PM

Jay,

Unrelated, that is one beautiful daughter you have there. What blues!

jay24k 08/14/2004 07:43 PM

Thanks. I should call her my little blue zoo. 1st because of her eyes and second cause she wears my butt out! Anyone got a blue zoanthid frag they wanna donate in her name? lol.

i went snorkiling and i brought bananna with me and the tangs would attack me for it. It was awesome. i highly doubt that a bananna would hurt the fish. I mean a bananna has to find its way into the ocean every now and than. being that they are found on islands

reefsociety101 08/20/2004 09:48 PM

I was in Thailand in January and the fish off of Koh Tao seemed to love pineapple chunks.

Ron Leversee 08/20/2004 09:51 PM

fed my fish some banana.... WHY????

Greens are ok but most fruit will not benefit fish!!

brc0488 08/20/2004 10:00 PM

dude chill its like you eating icecream... not good for ya nor benificial (well maybe calcium..) but we still eat it. Its not gonna kill them

Ehydo 08/21/2004 12:24 AM

If the eat something it most likely will not harm them. Animals are more aware of foods that are poisonous to them than people are. I have seen many bananas, coconuts, and other fruit floating in the ocean. I am not saying it grows there but almost anything in small amounts will not kill you.

Ryan 08/21/2004 05:11 PM

Bananas are sometimes grown in countries that use leaded gasoline. This results in trace amounts of lead in the banana- But it sure doesn't kill you. Now heavy metals in my reef tank? I'd likely avoid it.
