OK, now an ALK question !!!

I just ordered a new test kit.. It reads in PPM of alk..
I am used to KH and meg/l ....
but what PPM should I read !
I normally keep mine @ 9.0kh

J. Montgomery 01/10/2008 04:11 PM

They're likely equating ppm and meq/L as the same thing.

What brand?

Charlie Davidson 01/10/2008 04:18 PM

La Motte _
Man, I never was good at chemistry. I once made blueberry jam when everyones test tube just turned pink! :lmao:

Charlie Davidson 01/10/2008 04:23 PM

I heard somewhere that Salifert was having problems-- so I ordered this just to test against salifert..
Guess I can also ask in chem forum..

Charlie Davidson 01/10/2008 04:51 PM

Randy got back to me in chem forum..
1 meg/l = 2.8 dkh=50 ppm
Nice! but man, I would like to have a cross reference "table"
So for 9kh,, I will read 160ppm ... right?

Charlie Davidson 01/10/2008 05:27 PM

After 2 tests seem like they are pretty far apart! Lamotte reads 120ppm Salifert read 9kh..

Charlie Davidson 01/10/2008 06:59 PM

Salifert 9kh - La Motte 6.7
Hmmmm, Guess one has to go! I was wondering if I had not been warned.. Salifert needs to go.
Alk added 15min ago and polips are already coming back out on my millie!!

J. Montgomery 01/10/2008 07:30 PM

Charlie, out of curiosity, what is the serial number on your Salifert alkalinity test solutions?

Charlie Davidson 01/10/2008 07:42 PM

Ind -0607-e
kh reg. is 0507-d
I am 99.999999% sure something is wrong with it.. :mad2:
it reads alot higher that it should.
Soon after adding alk, SPS look better!!!
Not sure , but feel that I lost clams due to this :(
and a few SPS rare frags!!! :furious:

Charlie Davidson 01/10/2008 08:58 PM

PH has also gone back up .. :D

Thats the most recent batch that many people have been claiming is bunk. I've got one of those alkalinity kits as well, though I haven't tried it yet since I have finished my last kit . . . not exactly how I like to spend my $17.99 :mad2:

REEFY1 01/11/2008 12:37 AM

well, i about lost everything in my tank till i realized i had a kit reading 6.0 to high, i thought i was running 12.DKH turned out it was 6 you should see my live rock was nice and purple not its brownish-working on getting it back to purple though

Charlie Davidson 01/11/2008 01:00 PM

One of the LFS had some of that batch, so I suspect that more than a few of us bought it :(

surfnvb7 01/11/2008 10:21 PM

have any of you guys tried to return these defective test kits to the store you bought them from? i'd be curious if they would honor it like most places do with defective equipment.
