calero 08/12/2006 10:51 PM

hey guys , i got lucky, the guy that sell me the micro call me because the original piece that came in was broke in two and i get one half, well now they wanna sell the other half so i bought it, they fit perfectly, not even a piece of rock is missing so i glued them together and now i have a 60-65 polyps colony, this picture is just after i glued them, i will try now to regain the polyps that were lost, i will post again when it gets fluffy.

thanks

what type of lighting do you keep your lords and micros under???

ReefDoctorMicromussas 08/14/2006 02:27 PM

I use MH 250w X2 20K Radiums with 4X 110VHO act. and superwhite to supplement

sportsguy247 08/14/2006 04:12 PM

Same as doc

just curious, what are typical care conditions to make these corals grow at the fast ( for lps) rates that you guys get? I'm mostly an sps guy but i got one lord last year that bleached totally white at first & has now regained all it's color, but doesn't grow lol. I run 2 x 250 xm 10k, mr2 skimmer, reactor, nothing wrong with the tank becasue sps are doing very well. i was feeding it 4x a week for several months but stopped because it kept eating and eating but never grew.

ReefDoctorMicromussas 08/17/2006 12:21 AM

The micros definitly grow faster than the acans! soo much faster. I feed my micro colonies Cyclopeeze twice weekly and SOME of the colonies can double every 3-4 months or better. I bet the acan that you cant get to grow is one of the non-indos that you want to grow sooo badly LOL seems like the non-indos actually grow slower... has anyone else seen this?

Bottom line though... If you feed your micros they grow amazingly fast.

I've noticed that there is momentum with coral growth. If something interrupts that momentum, like bleaching, rtn, or other stress issues, the coral will switch out of it's growth mode and into the survival mode. You don't see a lot of growth in the survival mode, and it can take a long time and a lot of care for the coral to come out of that mode.

I have a few Acanthastrea lords that I'm watching for a friend. At one point, these corals were doubling the polyp count every month. After a couple years of crazy growth, the corals were put though some heavy stress. Some of the polyps were hanging off the skeleton. He put them in my care to save them. It's been about 4 months and they are looking better, but no growth. I would not expect to see growth out of them for a while, after what they went through.

ReefDoctorMicromussas 08/17/2006 12:28 AM

Amen and Hallelujah... Randy so agreed and well put

ReefDoctorMicromussas 08/17/2006 12:29 AM

Oh BTW Randy :) I just think I got a frag of one of your micros :)

tnyr5 08/17/2006 12:57 AM

i've noticed that a lot with sps, and other types of lps as well. Thanks randy & doc, i'll keep babying it and maybe look into picking up one of the less expensive micromussa for comparison.
