I thought this was a cool pic...

took this the other day, came out pretty nice considering i just really got started. this is a close-up pic of my bright yellow fiji brain. maybe if this goes over well i'll consider posting my other couple I snapped - based on what I've seen in here so far there are some nice corals and pics everyone has. :)

Please let me know what you think. Thanks!

Holy crap that is an epic picture

hybridgenius 01/10/2008 03:47 AM

I'd post the others also regardless of what others think. I appreciate you even sharing pics and your passion for photography, thats what this hobby is about. Nice pic!

very nice picture, interesting DOF. im sure i speak for lots here in saying we would love to see the whole coral :)...

breutus 01/10/2008 12:12 PM

yeah hat just seems an amazing shot to me as well!

ScallopKing 01/10/2008 01:42 PM

hybridgenius - you talked me into it - I'll put up the others tonight.

fatrip, thanks! What is DOF by the way? Whole coral coming tonight. It's the nicest brain I've ever had - not lost any color.

Phyl - I agree. The textures on the bumps at the bottom are what got me.

breutus - okay good. So it wasn't just me. Surprised it came out so good, first shot with my macro lens. Thanks.

Thanks everyone!

can't wait to see the coral as a whole. DOF is Depth of Field, not sure if you know what it means but if you dont, it means what is in focus and how far back things are in focus. it is cool becsue you got the front in focus...the little bumps, and then the is a line where the coral goes back under it self that isnt in focus and then some of the tenticals and flesh under the tenticals are in focus. that is why i said it looks so neat. by the way what camera and lense are you using?? thanks

jkreefer 01/10/2008 11:15 PM

here it is. it was hard to get a really good pic due to the angle it's placed at, but you get the idea. the pic was taken on the right back-side (out of view) which is the side of my tank. that's some serious close up of those tenticles. whew.

hey thanks for the explanation, had no idea what it was until now. i really agree with everyone, the more i check it out the better it gets. so, i have to give all the credit to the camera really - it does all the work. it's a Canon Digital Rebel XT SLR and the macro is Canon ef 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM (whatever all that means), oh forgot to add Ultrasonic too. okay still more confusing. as you can see i know nothing. lol. haha.

hey ya great pics that brain is very very cool lookin. with the DOF you can make it deeper aka get more of the coral in focus, if you bump up the F stop setting. play around with the F stop, also called apature, the smaller the number the larger the apature whole opens and the less DOF you get, so inturn the larger the fstop number the smaller the apature whole gets and you get a larger DOF. as you are doing this you will have to use a tripod becuase you will have to drop the shutter speed realy low in some shots. also you can bump the ISO up to compinssate for some it as well. You can also use the setting on the camera called AV it is apature priority which should put more of the coral in focus for you.

wow!!! the closeness of those shots are unbelievable.
