I found a tan/green zoanthid (a fairly sizable one at that with long tentacles) on one of my rocks a while ago, but just tonight I found a polychaete worm that I suspect to be a few inches long sticking out a cm or so out of a hole in the rock. It is the color of tea with cream in it, with a green sheen with fleshy apendages all along the side, one every few mm, only a few mm in length themselves. It also appears to spin mucous threads, for what purpose I don't know, though there are numerous possibilities.

That thing is the devil (literally)!
shua, you should get kayla a BK for her birthday
Now THERE is an idea :D...but you didn't hear that from me. ;)

Detritivore 08/13/2005 12:16 AM

whats the devil?

tsquad 08/13/2005 12:19 AM

I didn't start feeding the palys until last week. All I've given them was lots of light and moderate flow. I feed them mysis now, hopefully they will take off. Most people don't like them, but since they were my first coral, I'm going to make them flourish.

I think it's very reclusive and benign, because I've had a crocea on that rock for at least four months without any ill-effects and I haven't ever seen it before and I've had that rock for the entire duration of my reef. And besides, I don't think I would be able to get rid of it even if I wanted to, plus it's pretty cool. The only thing I think it could feed off of are micro organisms in the rock (bristle worms, 'pods and the like).

10:30 or so

Also I saw what I think to be the head and it had a shovel-like tip, suggesting that it remains in the rock permanently (you see the same sort of thing on snakes and lizards in the Sahara that spend most of the day beneath the sand).

Trust, I was (am) in the same boat as yourself; I've only seen the worm a few times. They produce a mucuous "blob" when attacking prey like you mentioned. It killed my prized maxima clam randomly one day and a conch later (plus some snails I figure). Check out this article
