green star polyps

how do you get green star polyps to grown like crazy? or does it just take a wile.

shramj 01/01/2008 07:36 PM

It will grow like a weed, just give it a little time, make sure you have some flow hitting it.

Kengaroo131 01/01/2008 07:46 PM

thats probably why its not growing i dont have much flow at all on it. its been in the tank for like 3 months now and hasent shown any signs of growth.

armagedon48 01/01/2008 11:50 PM

put a metal halide over it, and point a power head in its general direction and the stuff will grow 1/4 inch every two or three days.

under my PC lights, i would get that kind of growth every month or two.

the more light you have the faster it grows.

Bernie21 01/01/2008 11:58 PM

I just got one like 3 weeks ago & it is growing like crazy... I agree, just get some flow to it, I only have PCs.

shramj 01/02/2008 12:02 AM

I had a small piece in a part of my tank with no flow and it didn't grow, once I adjusted my power heads, it was getting flow and now it is growing like crazy. I am sure lighting helps but I have little light on mine and it still grows nicely.

Kengaroo131 01/02/2008 03:19 PM

alright thatnks guys i'll try the power head deal...

Kengaroo131 01/02/2008 10:40 PM

ok i just stuck it in front of my filter we'll see how it does.

conorwynne 01/03/2008 09:52 AM

It is best to avoid powerheads if possible -- at least ones with strong jets pointed at corals.

Mine get indirect (but strong) flow under halides & T5 actinics.
Watch them though, they can grow over your other corals if left unchecked.

I am deliberately growing mine from one piece of LR (totally covered) to another large piece. But with enough space so that they cannot grow onto other rocks.

Mind you, I can see some frags of it growing on other un-designated rocks. They just appeared from nowhere, I must have fragged it when moving LR around.

Regards
Conor.

Don't want to hijack Kengaroo, but I'd like to pose the hypothetical question. Supposing you ARE able to achieve a high growth rate with flow/lighting changes, what steps can be taken to isolate GSP to prevent them from invading areas where they are unwanted? How would you remove them if they accidentally infest an area that you do not want them in?

Kengaroo131 01/03/2008 02:58 PM

no its alright thats acctually a good question i'd also like to know.

i placed them in the middle under the hob filter so there getting enough flow to slightly move around. is that enough or to much?

thin crust 01/03/2008 04:02 PM

GSP can grow on the sand and onto the adjacement rock even if there's a gap between them. they've done it in my tank many times. heck, it even started to grow onto my glass. i usually take a razor blade and try to peel off its mat. so far i've been able to keep it under control.

Here's a pic of it attaching itself to my glass. Keep in there's about a 1/2" of sand from the rock it is on and the glass. The cool thing is it's easy to frag once it's on the glass. :D

Yeah, I have a friend that is giving me some, I am going to put it on an island in the middle of the sand so it wont take over my tank. I had that problem with xenia.

Kengaroo131 01/03/2008 08:30 PM

thats a nice mat you have there mine only about the size of a quarter i hope it growns haha

nanO352 01/03/2008 08:40 PM

Thin Crust is that in a 3g pico reef by JBJ?

Kengaroo131 01/03/2008 08:44 PM

yea do you have a full tank shot? it looks like a nice tank

thin crust 01/03/2008 10:16 PM

Actually it's my 25g Cadlight tank. This stuff grows like a weed. I have to trim/frag it every other month. It usually will cover a quarter size frag disc in about 5 weeks. Here's a FTS:

*sorry for the over exposed photo :P

Kengaroo131 01/03/2008 10:28 PM

wow! thats really nice it looks like a painting hahah very nice

thin crust 01/03/2008 10:34 PM

Thanks Dood! All those frag discs will be transferred to my AP12 once it is done cycling. Right now it looks kinda unnatural with the round discs everywhere.

Kengaroo131 01/04/2008 11:51 PM

its still super nice haha is that a green carpet anemone?

conorwynne 01/05/2008 07:34 AM

thin crust, do you frag it in the water or out?
I heard it can release poisons -- but maybe its not an issue?

Do you run carbon?

thin crust 01/05/2008 04:23 PM

Kengaroo131 - That's a neon open brain. My clowns think it's an anem though. o.O

conorwynne - I take the entire piece out of my tank and then frag it. I then have a holding container that I put them in after fragging for about 15 mins. After that it's back in the tank. So far I haven't had any issues. As for carbon, I run Chemipure-Elite.

Kengaroo131 01/06/2008 05:06 PM

that looks really good haha

thin crust 01/06/2008 08:57 PM

Thanks, here's a close up of it. =]
