sixline wrasse????

I just came from the LFS and I purchased a sixline wrasse only it has four lines. It looks exactly like a sixline except for the missing 2 lines. the guy in the fish store wasn't so sure either he thought it was neon wrasse and said it was a neon because it looked exactly like a sixline line but its colors are much more vibrant. I looked up neon and four line wrasses and they look nothing like a sixline. So I cant figure out the deal with this six (four) line wrasse. is it maybe tank bred and some kind of mutant or is some thing else?

Or... Maybe it's a four line wrasse? :)

I googled four line wrasse and didn't find that one. Thank you for the link

cool fish!

I've had one for a few months, and I love it. Very active, and lots of fun to watch. They are reputed to have a better disposition toward tank mates than the 6 line, and are a bit smaller.

A couple of our LFS list them as 12 line wrasse. There isn't a ton of info available about them, but try both 4 line and 12 line if you are searching.

They cost more and not as common around my area. Cool looking fish though, and I agree with card they aren't as aggressive towards tank mates.

Looks like you got a good deal cuz the fish guy dropped the ball...they are more expensive than the 6 line.

That hadn't even occurred to me, but you're right. In my area, the 4 lines are usually $50-60, but the 6 lines are $25-30. I think I paid $50 for mine.

Great fish, but make sure your tank is covered. They are known to jump like the sixlines.

Mine also regularly hops in and out of my overflow (always on the pod hunt). I use a section of fiberglass screen (pet screen from my local HD) to keep him from getting pulled into the sump.

I did pay extra for him I paid $40. he's been in the tank for 3 days but there is no sign of him today. yesterday he was hiding in the rocks and popped his head out a few times. I will check the floor in back of the tank. the tank is covered except for the back there is approx 2 inches of space in the back where he could have leaped. i lost my 6 line that way when I was running an open top I have since covered the tank with glass but its open a little in the back

danoreef 01/10/2008 07:35 PM

nope not on the floor any where. The article in the link above says its a very shy fish at first, so I hope he's just hiding.

danoreef 01/10/2008 07:44 PM

I found him, he is still alive and hiding behind my open brain. I fed the fish and he didn't come out. he does look a little stressed, I hope he makes it.

cardiffgiant 01/10/2008 10:11 PM

I barely saw mine for the first 2-3 weeks that I had it. It was like an event when it would dart across the front of the tank and then go back into hiding for 2 days. It's typical for them to be shy, but he's pretty much always out in front ever since he acclimated.

ok thanks
