Most Wanted?
I was just wondering out of all the years that people are on reef central what is the "Most Wanted LPS". In my opinion i think it is the watermelon chalice. What do you guys think feel free to express your opinion and post pics if you want.

I saw something called a mummy eye on reefs.org. Green body with pink eyes, kind of like a reverse watermelon. Sweet piece.
|
The Aussie Acans are currently the most wanted, I would say.
|
I would still say that chalices are the most wanted. $400 for a 3/4" frag.
|
i would never pay $400 for a frag of anything. its still a frag anyway you look at it.

That's not bad:) Offers for Mummy Eye frags have already reached 4 digits. Is this hobby crazy, or what?
|
I'd frag that bad boy in a heart beat Unarce. As long as you're not the one running the price up, and that's what someone is freely offering you... take their money! I am always on the look out for a nice coral, but I think I top out at ~$150 for a frag. A whole colony is a different story.
I have to agree with Iron Chef, aussie Acanthastrea are the big craze right now. Micromussa is still hot but maybe on the downfall (sorry Doc, I hope Im wrong haahaa). Chalice corals (Echinophyllia, Oxypora, Mycedium) seem to be heating up as they should, quick growers, gorgeous colours, neat shapes. Truth be told there are the untouchables that will always be a little more than everything else...and that's if you can find it in the first place. I think people are actively looking for aussie acans, or anything Australian, the most right now. |
Oh no, I didn't get the offer. I'm too chicken to frag it anyway:lol: I'm new to the 'chalice' thing.
|
Well I am loving the Aussie Scoly's that are coming in....I am also falling in love with chalices. This coming from an SPS fiend(or possbily former fiend)

As long as you're not the one running the price up
Sometimes I get the feeling there are folks who make random comments about the "offers" they may be getting , etc. that is in effect helping to drive up prices. This is my own opinion...completely unfounded...completely non proveable...but...my opinion none the less. I have always been one to say if people are willing to pay so be it, no problem with supply and demand either. I also like the names, the lineage, I think it is all part of the reef culture that is fun and makes this hobby fun. But at the same time when something is "hot" and in low demand to then comment on super large offers being made...this seems like a way to drive up prices. Personally for myself I refuse to charge large sums of money for small frags to folks.
Originally posted by Scythanith Chalice corals (Echinophyllia, Oxypora, Mycedium) seem to be heating up as they should, quick growers, gorgeous colours, neat shapes.
Agreed, the chalices are so colorful and so diverse in shapes and growth patterns, I love em :D. I still think the micros are also pretty hot, they are so very colorful as well. Now, the prices could be dropping a bit as more and more of the colonies grow and become more plentiful, that is good old fashion supply and demand. Anything Aussie is hot for sure. I got a nice little piece of that "supposed" reverse sunset monti. It is most definately awesome. The color blows away the "Fire Engine" montis which it more closely resembles. I think it is going ot be called the Forest Fire monti because it more truly captures the green and red contrast of the body to the polyps. In the end what's hot is whatever you want :D. |
That's probably true in most cases, Alicia. I can't prove either if what I heard was true.
I guess I don't mind so much when vendors try to hype up their corals. I hear they have to gain favor with wholesalers to get the primo stuff, which I'm sure is pretty costly. The market and prices seem to police itself anyway. The Aussie stuff is hot and pricey right now, but it's already saturated. Might not last very long. Please put me on your list for the Forest Fire;) |
Agreed, a few more months of large shipments of Aussie stuff and it will be more commonplace and easier to find, prices will drop eventually. I must say, some of those Acans comming in are so colorful. I love 'em.

Freight costs are so expensive, and the collectors there are charging a premium for the corals from what I've heard. Look at the price of the fish from there, they've been pretty consistent over the years. Where's the pic of that reverse Sunset?? :eek2: joe |
Come on Alicia, Show the people the Forest Fire. Today would be a great day!
|
Forest Fire Monti frag (I think that name suits it a bit better than the reverse sunset or sunrise monti, but call it what you want :)). The polyps were slightly retracted from disturbing it to get the picture and it still has more coloring up to do. It is definately happy in the tank and doing great. I can't wait for this guy to color up more and get big, mmm mmm delicious :D
