What height to mount a Carbon Monoxide detector?

I tried to call the customer service number, but it was busy.

SO...

With winter coming on and having a furnace that uses propane as back-up heat, I bought a carbon monoxide detector.

Where's the best place to mount it, high or low?

I'm thinking that CO is heavier than air and stays low so I should mount this thing low, like a foot off the floor or so, but maybe I'm confused?

What's the best height?

CO

Hey Aquaman.....being a building inspector/contractor watcher/engineer......I can tell you that the generally accepted height is that which electric outlets are mounted. CO is in fact heavier than air. The rule of thumb is smoke up....CO down. When using a smoke/CO combo the recomendation is to mount mid-wall.....not on the cieling. Hope this helps........Steve:dance:

Agree with the above, CO being heavier, you want the detector lower. Most of them available on the market (that I've seen anyhow) plug directly into an outlet, and most outlets are generally 2-3' from the floor.

Thanks,

That's what I was thinking but wanted to be sure. I bought one that's CO only and battery powered. There are no outlets where I feel this thing should go....

I also semi remember hearing a story where people sleeping on the floor of a house were killed by CO and the people who where in a bed survived because they were higher up...
