Like how you did the rock work 30 cubes are tricky to get a nice looking aquascape.

thin crust 01/09/2008 11:14 PM

nice set up you've got there. what type of lighting?

R_Hudson 01/09/2008 11:20 PM

aqualight 96w PC 50% 03 actinic and 50% 10,000k daylight

Looks good!

E30 E T A 01/10/2008 10:03 AM

I love the shape of those tanks! I wanna get one soon. Awsome looking!

reefman13 01/10/2008 10:08 AM

Take out those bio-wheels ASAP. All they will do is cultivate Nitrates. How come you didn't go with one big one?

mahalamata 01/10/2008 10:15 AM

nice setup man!i really like the aquascaping you've pulled of!wish mine looked as good...
the unidentified object you mention is the base of a polyp colony.i think they are called xenia.i have them in my tank and if they survive they look rather good!need medium/strong direct flow though to flourish

SaltwaterChris 01/10/2008 11:20 AM

Nice looking tank:D the unidentified looks like apitaias which if it is you want to get rid of it ASAP OR THEY WILL SPREAD EVERY WERE! and then there realy hard to get rid of when you have a bunch of them

phenom5 01/10/2008 12:01 PM

Agreed on the aiptasia...although, it's hard to tell from that pic.

And why is it that everybody and their brother gets coral hitchhikers on their LR...except me? :D

R_Hudson 01/10/2008 06:39 PM

reefman to answer your Q: my fish store was going out of business and so i bought pretty much everything they had left i got the Tank, light, single 150gpm power filter, and stand all for 300 bucks couldnt pass it up. I was tempted to just stick with 1 and do a seperate pump ie maxi jet but decided i liked the look of these and a different LFS made me a hell of a deal. ive total of 300gph flow. I was a little worried at first but i feel its plenty now that i have things in the tank.

kingfisher62 01/10/2008 10:45 PM

Nice setup plenty of room to clean the glass.
IMO those are button polyps and the purple matting with the "goosebumps" are Green star polyps>

I agree on the GSP...I actually didn't even see those. It looks like there's aiptasia in the background of that picture, but it's hard too tell because the background is out of focus.

And now that I take a second look, I'm not so sure...may be xenia or anthelia...or maybe some sort of sponge, but the more I look at it, the less I think its aiptasia.

cherubfish pair 01/10/2008 11:56 PM

I'm impressed with the piece of rock on the bottom in front. COMPLETELY covered with a super hue of coralline.

kingfisher62 01/11/2008 09:43 AM

R_Hudson, I do have one recommendation for your tank. correct me if i am wrong .It looks like the only circulation of water you have is from the two HOB power filters.
You might need 1 or 2 power heads in the tank to avoid deadspots and excess algae growth.
It is good idea to have your water circulation between
10 X to 20 X per hour. I prefer 20x.

How much water do your filters pump per hour?

R_Hudson 01/11/2008 09:54 PM

Kingfisher those are 2 power filters rated at 150 gph each so thats 300gph total on a 30 gal tank. I think i have plenty of flow I may end up putting a small maxi jet or hydor koralia. but for now i feel i have enough. thanks for all the comments my unidintified object has moved a little tomorrow i will try to get a better pic of it.

reefman13 01/11/2008 10:16 PM

Thats all good. But the bio-wheels are NOT good. They WILL create, and harbour nitrates like crazy.

NanoReefWanabe 01/11/2008 11:34 PM

i guess it really depends what you plan on keeping in there....over time your pumps will slow as the filters build up so your 10X is going to be more like 7X...

if you gonna keep coral remember they dont have lungs to draw in air so to speak...and they cant move...your 250gph at best probably isnt even enough to keep sea horses...my twenty gallon tank has about 1400gph through it and i still have dead spots/ detritus traps...(stupid rock walls)

most coral require flow to sluff, shed, eat, fight, poop, breath, etc...not enough flow will equal lots of dead corals..or at best, very unhappy ones...

the rocks look awesome....i love the cubes...

kingfisher62 01/11/2008 11:50 PM

Have your Green Star Polyps open yet?

OK, a couple of things. Like others have said, no reason for the biowheels. Get rid of them. Second, I like the rock, but I have a feeling in the future you're going to want more. Personally I would push the rock back a little. Are you honestly going to clean the back glass that much? Plus if you have room in the front, you can add corals to your sand. In the end though, I think you'll eventually add a few more pieces of rock. Finally, two 150gph filters are nothing, lol. I've got a 7g freshwater tank with one of those on it. As others have said, the flow will slow down out of those things. Don't be afraid to add more. I know it'll sound like a lot of flow at first, but it isn't. I have a Mag 7 as my return pump(about 450gph) and two MJ 900's(for 460gph total for the powerheads). So I have a lot of flow....and all of that is in an Oceanic 37g cube. That still doesn't seem like much to me, lol.

AberFitchFish 01/12/2008 02:42 AM

love the look of the tank. I'd like to do something similar for my nano
