This sucks, I bought it as a squamosa but it is a maxima. A dead one now.

nietzsche 01/05/2008 10:57 AM

did you buy this at your LFS? and how did it die? sorry about your loss

skinz78 01/05/2008 12:00 PM

online, didn't make it through shipping.

Jeremy Blaze 01/05/2008 03:22 PM

Looks more like a crocea to me.

a4twenty 01/05/2008 03:45 PM

no it was a maxima

kdblove_99 01/06/2008 11:38 PM

Dang, That is too bad! You get it at Marine depot live?

skinz78 01/07/2008 12:00 AM

no, ebay. I haven't heard back from the seller yet buy he makes things right.

hahnmeister 01/07/2008 03:25 AM

ouch...

norwall 01/07/2008 03:52 AM

Are you sure hes dead? Ones I have seen are open when they are dead. Not being a smartass either , but open for a clam is a passive response, they use there muscle to close. Sorry to hear that either way, that sucks.

skinz78 01/07/2008 10:00 AM

no it is dead, in the pic the mantle is off of the shell and sitting in the bottom of it. the shell is open.

hahnmeister 01/07/2008 02:37 PM

Yeah, thats the 'about to die' pose. I have never seen a clam come back from that.

reefkoi 01/07/2008 10:30 PM

DAMN I hope the ebayer makes it good with you. If not let us know.
Ebay always scares me.

He always does, it is empireaquatics1 and his name is Nate.
I have received 4-5 shipments from him so far and plan on many more.

Nate is a standup guy. I have bought 2 of his sps 6 packs, one acro died, he sent me a replacement no charge. I purchased a duncanno 1 polyp frag it didn't make it through shipping, Nate sent out a free duncanno mini colony. 2 crocea's I purchased from him didn't look like the clams in the auction but none the less very nice, He sent me out this squamosa free to make up for it. One of the sps frags is in the pic to the right of the clam and the duncanno is below it, the pic cuts it in half though. It has 8-10 polyps.

reefturkey 01/08/2008 01:22 AM

That sucks. that had to be an expensive one.

skinz78 01/08/2008 02:26 AM

$170

Jeremy Blaze 01/08/2008 08:50 AM

The shell has no visible scutes, which leads me to believe it is a crocea.

nietzsche 01/08/2008 09:08 AM

i see the scutes

hahnmeister 01/09/2008 01:32 AM

Yes, but they are small, like crocea, not large like maxima...

Also, do you see how dramatic the overlaping of the scutes is at the top edge of the shell on a maxima...

Id say its a crocea as well... but I would need to see more photos to be sure. Do you have a pic of it before you got it (the sales photo)? The mantle can help as well.

It may be an honest mistake. Importers sometimes dont know and they ship it under whatever sounds better. If you google maxima clam, you will see many pics of crocea's mixed in... called 'green maxima (really just green croceas), gold maxima, etc. Black croceas are alot more common, so it might be tempting for someone who finds a black mantle one to try to sell it as crocea. I once went to a friends place who claimed to have bought one of the rare 'blue squamosa' clams. As soon as I saw it, I knew what it was... a large pale blue maxima clam... not even 1st grade... just larger than commonly seen for sale. He didnt want to hear it though, but I told him 'we will see based on its growth'. Sure enough, a year later, its barely grown... a squamosa would be adding an inch or two by now even at that size... but not a maxima.

I gotta say, that 'black maxima' looks like a '1st grade crocea' to me.

skinz78 01/09/2008 01:45 AM

I will try to clean the dead flesh out tomorrow and get pics of the shell

mbbuna 01/09/2008 02:48 AM

are you kidding me? the photo of skins poor dead clam is of a maxima

mbbuna 01/09/2008 02:51 AM

hahnmeister 01/09/2008 04:11 AM

We will see... a pic of the bottom of the shell would settle it.

skinz78 01/09/2008 10:05 AM

mbbuna is the clam ID GURU I beleve him. Look on page 79 of fatheree's book the shells on the left of the page look identical to mine. And page 79 is the maxima shell page..

skinz78 01/09/2008 10:08 AM

:( why's everyone gotta rain on my already soggy parade? :sad2:
