Whats your P04? (Per hanna meter) For optimum SPS #'s

I would like to know what you strive for in po4. Mine is at 0.03, Would like 0.02 but I am having some cotton candy algae die off in my fuge and is impossible to do at the moment, but once that's over I don't think that's a problem because I achieved it before.
Curious if I should lower my numbers, I know zeo users like it to read 0.00
Also what do you use to achieve it?
I dose vodka 10Ml every other day, run GFO, Run phosguard in my ca/rx effluent, and have a fuge full of chaeto.

Nanook 01/08/2008 01:41 PM

I find it helps when I drink the vodka:D

Creetin 01/08/2008 01:46 PM

Yeah, I useally give a shot to the tank and 2 for me with a little red bull.;)

Nanook 01/08/2008 01:51 PM

No idea on the numbers here, just know I am getting ready to get back in with the stonies and softies on a mixed system....I have never run a sterile setup in the past and relied on skimming and macros....on this setup I have I am thinking the massive skimmer I have and some ozone should do the trick...I think some phosphates are OK.

SPStoner 01/08/2008 01:54 PM

Mine is running .05 per Hanna (thanks, Ed!) and all seems well. Good color and growth in SPS and LPS. I have a total of about 260 gallons and run about 1/2 cup of GFO in a reactor, no fuge.

midas blenny 01/08/2008 04:01 PM

mine are .00 with no fuge. i would like po4 at .02. run a mtc 1000 skimmer on a 300 gallon system. think sometimes i strip the water of trace elaments but everything looks good.

I like to keep it below .10 but anywhere between .04 and .10 doesn't seem to affect the colors any.

I have my at .00 but would like it at nsw (.02-.03)

Marko9 01/08/2008 06:33 PM

yep- anywhere from .03-.07 depending on how lazy I get when washing my food. I would not compare my tank to a zeo tank because my tank is not a zeo tank.

I use Phosar HC as my export media.

gcarroll 01/08/2008 06:49 PM

.02 - .03 lately. I also use Phosar HC in a phosban reactor.

pimo 01/08/2008 06:56 PM

My tank is new, so the po4 is between 0.04-0.01.
My goal is to keep the po4 at 0.01

Tests done with hanna photometer.

midas blenny what test do you use?, from your pics it doesnt look like a 0.00 tank.

Creetin 01/08/2008 07:14 PM

Well I don't have a zeo tank either, I was just using at what they strive for, and try to see what everybody else tries for. and what works for them. A lot here that posted I would love for my tank to look like so I trust what they do.
Well I guess .03 isn't bad then. I thought NSW was 0.0027???
Keep it coming,,Lets here what everybody else wants and runs in their tanks..

cwegescheide 01/08/2008 07:49 PM

My Po4 is at .14 (Hanna) and my coloration is pretty crappy if you ask me. Not all corals but I'd say 75% of them. My nitrates are at < 4ppm Lamotte..

I JUST put a Phosban reactor online last weekend and I'm hoping to see improvement in coloration after a week or two.

I'm just hoping the .14 Po4 reading is atleast partially to blame for lack of vibrant coloration.

jamesdawson 01/08/2008 09:04 PM

Claude from Fauna Marin reccomends .04 as being optimum, but in my experience anywhere in the range of .02-.07 is fine as long as all your other parameters are good.

i tend to keep mine at about .02-.04. I use rowaphos and change it every two weeks. If i go any lower then that my corals tend to lighten up. So I keep it at that. Oh and if I recall the hanna will never read 0.00 it will only go as low as .01 from what the manual says.

KEstep 01/08/2008 11:50 PM

Mine runs .04 but it has swayed from .01 and up to .07 before.

it might take more than a few weeks to see results because the phates might be bound in the rock, sand, & algae!
Plus, your media might get saturated in a day or 2 at first. Check parems often when starting GFO. IMHO

Oh really? I did not know that... I have been told that Rowaphos is a much better media to use than Phosban.

My P04 is .18 right now & my corals are very colorful. Even nicer than when it was at .02-.03. What's interesting is that my glass is clear & I haven't cleaned it in five days. I cleaned it all the time at .03.

I think theres a relationship between N & P that creates a balance.......if your ratio is correct than you'll see the results. I'm not sure this is something that can be measured, although I'd like to check my nitrates with a photmeter to see what they are......with a Salifert kit it's 0.

I use a skimmer & water changes........nothing else. I've been contemplating using some GFO.

Can I see some recent pics of your corals? Mine is .14 (Hanna) and Nitrates is 4ppm Lamotte and I think half my corals don't look very well compaired to friends tanks. I was thinking this was because of high phosphates. So lets see yours!! :)

Creetin 01/10/2008 08:55 PM

I would like to see them too. I am not saying it cant, But i dont think they would look colorfull with po4 at 0.18
My trAtes are .0 as far as i can tell per fast test.

mflamb 01/10/2008 09:04 PM

Mine tested at .05 (Hanna). The tank is only 6 months old. I've had a fuge since day 1. Just started GFO after the .05 test. I have 1 gallon of GFO in a DIY reactor.

Nice looking DIY reactors!

Do you have a build thread on them?

James

Lots of people stating their PO4 numbers here. Is everyone using a Hanah meter or what? Just curious.
